Sid Ahuja Sid Ahuja is currently the Director of Bell Labs' Multimedia Communications Research Laboratory, where he is leading and managing research in video-based communication, speech recognition, text-to-speech coding techniques, and novel multimedia applications. Under a consulting arrangement with Bell Laboratories, the research and development arm of Lucent Technologies, he is also the executive scientist for GeoVideo Networks, Inc. Sid led the development of the first collaborative multimedia system, Rapport, in the 1980s. His early work involved associative memories, pipelining and parallel processing. He has been involved in the design and implementation of multimedia conferencing systems, multiprocessor systems, packet telephony, and friendly user interface design. His current interests are in the field of communication applications over the Internet and the use of multimedia technologies such as speech, audio and video for natural multimedia communications. Sid is a fellow of Bell Labs. He has served as Chairman for the Multimedia Services and Terminals Committee of the IEEE Society, Area Editor for the IEEE Communications Committee and Editor for Transactions on Networking, a joint publication of IEEE and ACM. Sid obtained his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from Rice University in 1974 and 1977, respectively. His undergraduate education was at the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, where he received a Bachelor of Technology Degree in Electrical Engineering in 1972. He has been with Bell Laboratories since 1977.
