Las Vegas Overview: Sunrise MountainFrom the 5000-room hotels on "The Strip", Las Vegas can seem gigantic. A trip to Frenchman's Mountain (often called Sunrise Mountain), east of the strip, can give you a more realistic perspective. It will help you to visualize the growth of the city from the small group of hotels to the north -- the 'old' Las Vegas -- to the sprawling expansion of super-hotel casinos to the south. In the distance, at the right-edge of this photo is Mt. Charleston, an 11,000 ft. peak where you can often find snow on the ground in April -- but where you can't see a hint of Las Vegas!!! This is also a great view at night!! |
Las Vegas at Night: Stratosphere Tower From ground level, Las Vegas towers over the average tourist, and distorts your perspective the way New York City does. The Stratosphere gives you a chance to TOWER back. Its interesting anytime, but its especially effective at night. The casinos light up the land to the south, but the sodium-yellow streetlights of the 'real' Las Vegas stretch in all directions for miles!! |
Lake Mead : The Liquid Life of Las VegasThe only way that a gazillion people could live in the desert is with easy access to a gazillion gallons of fresh water, each day. Lake Mead is that water, held in place by Hoover Dam. One of the really fun-things to do here is to cruise the lake. This was our "big event" during the 2000 Technology Conference (thanks Ralph!!) and it was great!! There are day and evening cruises, and you can get more detail at WEBSITE INFO HERE.
